How to teach Cover 4 Quarters

By FlagPlays · Updated . Practical starting points for volunteer coaches. Check your competition’s rules before using a play.

Left and right refer to the diagram. Route depths are illustrations; adjust them to your field and players. Check eligibility, running and rush rules.

When to try it
Practice four deeper lanes against an offense spreading several receivers across the field.
Coverage plan
Four defenders protect depth while two cover underneath. Discuss the short-middle gap and how the nearest defender closes on a catch.
Teaching cue
Each deep player owns a lane, not a receiver everywhere on the field.
Common mistake
Four deep defenders collapsing on one route and abandoning the opposite side.
